まだ少しハワイ火山国立公園の写真を続けます。
今回の写真は正直ほとんど記憶にありません。。たしか、Crater Rim Drive からキラウエア・カルデラ側に入った場所にあったと思うのですが、どうだったか。
解説の文字がこれまた見にくいですが、こんなことが書かれています。
ERUPTION: April 30/May 1, 1982
Spatter ramparts and lava flows before you are the results of a 19 hour eruption which began on April 30, 1982. Erupting lava fountained along a one kilometer fissure trending northeasterly. This line of vents formes nearly continuous ‘curtain of fire’ between 5 or 10 meters high with frequent bursts to 25 meters. Lava flows to the north, east and south covering a portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu Trail. Over 500,000 cubic meters of a new lava was added to the Caldera floor. Although shortlived, this eruption was viewed by over 45,000 people.
いきなり “Spatter ramparts” という聞き慣れない単語。こういうときはイメージ検索でググってみます。なるほど、そういうものかと。spatter は「（水や泥の）はね」とかいう意味で、ramparts は「塁壁，城壁」という意味。その後に出てくる “fissure” は「割れ目、亀裂」という意味なので、なんとなく想像できます。
つまり、地面に長く続いている裂け目からの噴火で、ドロドロした溶岩の堤防のような感じになったということでいいと思います。
亀裂から溶岩が吹き出ているときは、まるで curtain of fire（火のカーテン）だったということでしょうかね。
この噴火は長く続かなかったけど4万5000人もの人が見ている、とも書かれています。そうか日本から海外旅行自由化が1960年代で、この噴火が1982年だから、もう観光地として十分に賑わっていますもんね。当時、見てた人のウェブサイトとかないかな。
